How do NEWA and ERA5 compare for assessing offshore wind resources and wind farm siting conditions?

چکیده

Abstract In advance to the construction of a wind farm, resource assessment is performed, often by use atlas data. Two widely used and publicly available numerical datasets, ERA5 recently created NEWA, are compared evaluated regarding climatology, variability extreme speeds using comprehensive database with high quality offshore measurements. NEWA shows be more accurate but less precise in terms predicting mean speed correlation coefficients. However, higher temporal resolution causes better representation for sites. Extreme predictions based on both datasets underestimated average. The spectral correction method applied found appropriate error 50-year return from some sites while it fails others.

Synthetic Aperture Radar for Offshore Wind Resource Assessment and Wind Farm Development in the UK

The UK has an abundant offshore wind resource with offshore wind set to grow rapidly over the coming years. Optimisation of energy production is of the utmost importance given the high installation and maintenance costs of offshore turbines; accurate estimates of wind speed characteristics are critical during the planning process. While operational assessment methods which rely upon in-situ obs...

Automated grid connection design process for offshore wind farm clusters

An automated grid connection design process for offshore wind farm clusters that takes into account the variability of wind and power demand/prices is demonstrated on a 7200 MW case study inspired by Dogger Bank, using the Net-Op planning tool. Two modelling approaches for demand, generation and prices are outlined and compared for this case study. Both approaches result in the same optimal off...

Improvement of the Wind Farm Model Flap for Offshore Applications

The wind farm program FLaP (Farm Layout Program), developed at the University of Oldenburg, has been extended to improve the description of wake development in offshore conditions. Especially the low ambient turbulence and the effect of atmospheric stability have been addressed. Model results have been compared with measured vertical wake profiles and mean turbulence intensities from the Danish...

Assessing the Validity of Wind Farm Noise Monitoring Data for Periods of Partial Wind Farm Operation

Wind farm noise compliance assessments require measurement of the wind farm noise under full operating conditions. Normal wind farm operation typically includes periods where one or more wind turbines may be unable to operate, due to maintenance requirements, grid restrictions, or other factors. For a large wind farm with many wind turbines, or in situations where cumulative noise impacts from ...
